Every February people who dig mid century design and architecture flock to the desert for Modernism Week Palm Springs. A total of over 30,000 people come out which makes for a busy time in downtown. Hotels are nearly at full capacity if not already. Tickets to lectures, tours and films sell out fast. This year we ventured out. We had tickets for the documentary film “Eames: The Architect and the Painter” and for entry to the convention center which this year was little disappointing. There were not enough vendors as before. It was still rad to see rare pieces. Forget about thrift shopping around this time. Everything is picked over. I know we tried. But, the vintage and mid century boutiques had ample amounts of treasures. My favorite shop is Dazzles in Palm Springs right off Palm Canyon Dr. Lovers of Bakelite this is place to find the rarest of things. I really love the desert this time of year, the weather is perfect and at night you can see the stars. Something I don’t get to see very often. With tons of great vintage shopping, thrift stores and places to eat like the new restaurant by Iron Chef Jose Garces restaurant Tinto. Another good one is Birba part of the new boutique hotel which we stayed in Alcazar. it makes for a fun get-a-way. The museum was undergoing construction but there are other great places to check out art.. Like the Shag gallery , M Modern gallery and in Palm Desert the Imago gallery is also yielding some good pieces. Especially that massive Dale Chihuly piece they have in the window of the second story. They also have some pieces by Kandinsky and Ruscha.

 
 
The show ends on February 26… It’s worth an overnight trip!

Of course I got a new book on the Bauhaus and Eames coasters.

I stumbled upon this animation video this morning and just wanted to share done by Michel Ocelot who is a French writer, storyboard artist and director of animated films and television programs. Michel Ocelot was the former president of the ASIFA. He Also did a video for Björk. Happy Friday!!

CRAFTCATION is around the bend. For this who do not know what CRAFTCATION is here is a small description of what it entails of. No, it’s not another indie handmade show but rather it is a three day  indie business & DIY craft conference. With 50+ lectures on small business and hands-on DIY craft, food & sewing workshops with 30+ industry professionals like JENNY HART, CRAFTY CHICA, CATHY CALLAHAN, AIDA MOLLENKAMP and THE URBAN CRAFT CENTER that will be held in Ventura CA. on March 22nd – 25th. The lovely ladies behind the successful Patchwork Indie Arts & Crafts Festival Delilah of Backyard In A Jar and owner of The Road Less Traveled and Nicole of Random Nicole have organized this event. These ladies always kill it when it comes to events like this and are in total support of helping those just starting out with a small indie business. With the wonderful events that they have hosted and organized everything from craft work shops to social media marketing workshops to fun Etsy group crafting parties they have always been in support of handmade and of the local economy. One person who I have to give tons of credit to is that gal who also kills it when it comes to graphic design, branding, web site stuff and is an amazing social media networker, blogger, mom, wife, crafty chic the list goes on.. Steph Calvert of Hearts and Laserbeams and I have worked on tons of projects everything from giving my website a facelift, SEO stuff on my site and blog, designing hang tags for my trinkets when I was getting ready to expand and get into boutiques, working on a Facebook landing page for my other business “Christina Sanchez Hair Design“, tweaking my business cards a bit and now she has been busy designing a brand logo for the Christina Sanchez Hair Design. Steph is also the lady who helped with the design and doing the web stuff for CRAFTCATION along with has worked on many projects with those in the handmade community.
